Perfect Granola Bars

This is probably my favorite make-it-at-home-yourself recipe!  Its easy to put together and makes 18 granola bars.  When you compare that to the price of store bought granola bars with only 5 or 6 in the box, this definitely saves money.  These are nice and chewy and you can add whatever you like to them.  I often make them with chocolate chips because that's Ross' favorite, but we've also used craisins, butterscotch chips, or peanut butter chips (not all together).  I store these in a container in the freezer so that they stay fresh.  They thaw quickly enough that we just grab them out of the freezer and eat them.  As you can see, they don't last long... 

4 1/2 cups oats
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
1 stick and 1/3 cup butter (softened)
1/2 cup honey
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 cup chocolate chips or craisins (or any other seeds or nuts you want to add)

Mix well and press into a greased 9 x 13 pan.  Bake at 325 for 18-22 minutes.  Use the bottom of a glass cup to press down again after they are done cooking.  Slice and keep in the freezer.  Makes 18 bars.  Enjoy!

  4. Did you use quick oats or regular ones? Do you think it will make a big difference if I use quick oats (as that's what I have kicking around the kitchen)?

  5. Meg, I use regular oats because they aren't as processed. I don't think it would hurt the recipe much to use quick cooking though, give it a try!

  9. I got this recipe from the link at Heavenly Homemakers and I just want to say THANK YOU!! My kids love granola bars and I have tried many recipes that they don't like. Since I haven't found a good recipe, I have been buying them. I made these last night and the only change I made was using a little peanut butter for some of the butter. I was kinda worried because the mixture was not as moist and sticky as I expected (I was afraid they would be crumbly). But they are wonderful!! I put half in the freezer and half in the fridge. My 3 year old has eaten 3 already. They really are the "Perfect Granola Bars".

  12. I stumbled across these about a month ago. I loved how simple the recipe was and that I had everything on hand.

    Tried out the first batch and they were a hit with the entire family. I've made a batch every week since then. These are now a staple snack in our home.

  13. Thanks for this recipe! I made them using raising & they're delicious. They are a little bit crumbly. Is this normal or do I need to troubleshoot a little bit? I cooked for 20 minutes & cooled for about 10 minutes before cutting.

    1. They do tend to crumble a bit. Be sure you press them down really well both before and after baking, that helps some. :)

    2. I noticed that if I melt the butter to long rather than softening it and letting it stay thick enough to be creamed, my bars tend to turn out more crumbly. Hope that helps!

  15. Love this recipe!!! I made it gluten free with gf oats and gf oat flour instead of wheat flour and they turned out great!!! Fortunately our family is not oat sensitive so we can enjoy this yummy treat. :)

  16. I found these off of the Tammy's recipes site and I have made them twice in the past 10 days. I can't keep them in stock in the house! My partner and daughter love them, and they are the perfect "on the go" breakfast food for them before work or college.
